Happy Easter! As you celebrate Easter, which is about the resurrection of Christ, I wanted to send you a link to my GenealogyBank.com article about Easter 1939, when Marian Anderson, one of the most internationally revered artists at the time, gave a concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
Denied the ability to perform at two different locations in Washington D.C., Anderson accepted the interior secretary’s invitation to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. NBC carried the concert live on radio to Americans throughout the nation. Anderson’s concert was heard by more people as a result.
This week, I wrote in detail about Marian Anderson’s 1939 Easter concert in an article for GenealogyBank.com.
Anderson opened her Lincoln Memorial concert by singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and closed the concert with Gospel spirituals.
This summer I am releasing a new children’s book series called Revolutionary Readers for America’s 250th. One of the books is the story behind “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and features Marian Anderson among several Americans who sang this song for special occasions. Stay tuned and I’ll let you know when the book is released, likely around Flag Day, June 14.
