We all know what happens when there’s a vacuum of information in a major news story. News consumers fill in the blanks, speculating and guessing what is going on when leaders are not forthcoming with facts and information.
Such was the case with the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The American people did not know what was happening, whether George Washington and other leaders were amending the existing constitution, called the Article of Confederation, or if they were drafting a brand-new document. Newspaper articles were filled with speculations and unanswered questions.
For Constitution Day this year, which is September 17, I wrote an article for Genealogy Bank about how newspapers covered the Constitutional Convention, which was called the federal convention at the time. Enjoy this unique peak into one of the most critical times in America’s founding era.
I also wrote about the Constitution in my devotional, Stories of Faith and Courage from the Revolutionary War.
