The US Army's 250th: Red Stripes of Valor
Sharing the virtues assigned to the nation's colors through the words of George Washington
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the US Army. The Continental Congress established the Continental Army on June 14th, 1775.
Two years later in 1777 on the same day, June 14, the new Congress gave the new Army a new official flag, known as the Betsy Ross flag today. The only difference between that flag and our flag today is the number of stars. In 1777 we had 13 states symbolized by 13 stars, and today we have 50 states and 50 stars on our nation’s flag.
Near the end of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress assigned virtues to the colors red, white and blue. Although I've discussed these colors and their virtues before, this is the first time that I have exclusively used General George Washington's words to show how the Army's first commander viewed the virtues of valor, innocence, purity perseverance, justice and vigilance.
We will start with the color red, which means valor and hardiness. What did George Washington say about valor?
